And her eyes. They seemed to search for his.
His feet moved toward her like a ship toward a lighthouse.
Synopsis
Nothing shapes glass like fire...
Theresia Dvorak has nothing left of her parents-not even her dowry, a priceless crystal vase stolen and sold by her own stepmother. Theresia will do anything to secure what is rightfully hers-including assuming a false identity and stealing her future back. When she gains entrance to a house party and has a memorable run-in with the handsome naval captain Rolland Reese, her mission is compromised. She swore never to trust an Englishman again, but when he makes a daring proposal she cannot refuse, she must work side by side with him if either of them is to achieve their aim.
Rolland is stunned when his homecoming from the war takes a decidedly deadly turn. The quickest solution is to throw a house party and invite all the suspects. With the stakes incredibly high, Rolland must root out the killer before they turn their sights to the next potential victim: his own father. The mysterious Theresia is undoubtedly the most suspicious of his guests, but against all odds, he finds himself risking everything to protect her. As Rolland unravels a tangle of clues, he faces the greatest threats of all: a heart of fire and a future as fragile as glass.
Thoughts & Feelings
Fairy tale retellings will always have a place in my heart. There is something truly magical about how an author can take a well-known and well-loved story and make it something new but familiar. I love seeing the spins authors take on stories I have loved since I was a child.
I have loved Anneka R. Walker's Enchanted Regency Romance series since I first read The Masked Baron. I have loved Anneka's spins on Beauty and the Beast (The Masked Baron) and Sleeping Beauty (The Dreaming Beauty) and was confident that I would love her retelling of Cinderella.
Words cannot adequately describe how much I love this retelling. It truly has my heart.
I loved that Anneka put a completely new spin on the classic Cinderella story. This might be one of the most retold fairy tales of all time and I have read my fair share of them. I am being completely honest when I say I've never seen it retold like this. She did a wonderful job weaving together parts of the classic tale with her unique murder mystery spin. Don't worry it isn't scary, just a bit suspenseful.
One of my very favorite things about his novel was how much world and family history Anneka R. Walker wove into The Lady Glass. In her author's note, Anneka mentions how some of her ancestors were glass blowers and that history was a big influence on our leading lady Theresia and her back story. The story also takes place during a well-known era, but a not-so-well-known specific event, the Congress of Vienna. I loved getting to see this little but significant moment in history and how the upcoming Congress of Vienna may have affected the lives of those in Parliament.
I also loved our main man, Rolland, and leading lady, Theresia. I love that they are so different from the traditional Prince Charming and Cinderella. Rolland is a Naval Captain and a force to be reckoned with. He is very protective of those he loves, often takes himself too seriously, and has a heart of gold. I promise that you are going to love him! Theresia is completely opposite of how Cinderella is traditionally portrayed, which I love! She is indeed a step-daughter and her step-mother is quite like Lady Tremaine. However, Theresia is a bit of a headstrong rule breaker and gets quite creative in her quest to find her stolen vase. This combination makes for not one, but THREE amazing meet cutes between Rolland and Theresia. Each one better than the last! I loved seeing them on the page together and watching them try to figure each other out.
Lastly, I absolutely loved how much we got to see the couples from the previous two books in this series. It was fun to see how the men all connected (it's so good!) and see the friendships that have developed between the leading ladies. I want these Belle, Aurora, and Cinderella characters to be real so that I can go chat with them. Not that I'm cool enough to be their friend but hey I can pretend right?
The Lady Glass was absolutely phenomenal and I cannot gush about it enough.
A word of advice: I highly recommend rereading, or reading, the first two books in the series before beginning The Lady Glass because of how much the characters appear in this book. I don't think you'll get lost if you skip them but you are going to miss so many cute easter egg moments.
